Smart Maritime
The frontrunner project Smart Maritime, part of the Sector Agenda Maritime Manufacturing Industry, was established to make the maritime sector smarter and more technologically advanced. The core of this project is the development of ships and systems that can operate increasingly independently and work well together. This involves not only individual ships, but specifically a network of ships, drones, and other systems that jointly perform tasks at sea.
An important goal of Smart Maritime is to improve maritime safety and security. Examples include protecting critical infrastructure in the North Sea, such as wind farms, cables, and pipelines. The Dutch government, and Defence in particular, plays a larger role in this, as this infrastructure is of great strategic importance.
Within this project, there is a strong focus on unmanned and autonomous technologies. This means that ships or systems can operate without a direct crew, or with minimal human control. These systems can, for example, patrol independently, carry out inspections, or cooperate with other ships and drones. This makes it possible to monitor large sea areas more efficiently and intervene more quickly in the event of problems or threats.
In addition, digitalization plays a major role. By utilizing data, sensors, and smart software, ships can make better decisions and collaborate more efficiently. Think of systems that share real-time information, analyze situations, and react automatically. This makes maritime operations not only smarter but also more reliable and safer.
The project is still in a development phase, during which existing initiatives and technologies are first being mapped out and interconnected. Subsequently, a plan is being drawn up to further expand and finance these developments. Companies, knowledge institutions, and the government are working closely together on this.
The importance of Smart Maritime is significant. By developing these technologies, the Netherlands can better protect its vital interests at sea, such as energy supply and infrastructure. At the same time, it strengthens the international position of the Dutch maritime sector, as these innovative systems can also be exported.
In short, Smart Maritime revolves around creating a smart, digital, and partially autonomous maritime environment in which ships and systems work together to make the sea safer, more efficient, and future-proof.
