SMASH!
SMASH!, the Dutch Forum for Smart Shipping, brings the Dutch maritime sector together to implement smart shipping and strengthen the sector’s competitive position.
Smart shipping refers to highly automated navigation at sea and on inland waterways. It is not only about smart and increasingly autonomous vessels. The navigation environment, infrastructure, information systems, and legislation and regulations also need to evolve. This creates a smart and connected maritime system in which digital technology supports human decision-making and can increasingly take over tasks.
Smart shipping offers significant opportunities for the Dutch maritime sector. It can contribute to safer and more efficient navigation, more sustainable shipping, and a strong international competitive position.
Working together on smart shipping
In the Netherlands, many companies, government organisations, and knowledge institutions are working on smart shipping and the development of autonomous vessels. However, many of these initiatives are developed independently of one another. To enable smart shipping to be implemented on a large scale, greater collaboration and coordination are needed.
SMASH! therefore brings together industry stakeholders, government organisations, and knowledge institutions. By connecting knowledge, developments, and regional initiatives at a national level, organisations can learn from one another, jointly develop projects, and bring innovations into practice more quickly. A coordinated Dutch approach also makes it easier to connect with international initiatives and strengthen the Netherlands’ position in the field of smart shipping.
How do we do this?
SMASH! works towards this ambition by:
- bringing the sector together and acting as a central point of contact for smart shipping;
- developing a joint roadmap and knowledge agenda;
- initiating joint projects and encouraging collaboration;
- providing a platform for dialogue on topics such as legislation and regulations;
- connecting Dutch and regional initiatives;
- putting smart shipping on the national and international agenda.
