SMASH!
SMASH!, the Dutch Forum for Smart Shipping, brings together the Dutch maritime sector to implement smart shipping and thereby strengthen the sector’s competitive position.
In the Netherlands, many organizations and companies are involved in smart shipping and the development of autonomous vessels. Currently, these efforts are highly fragmented. By collaborating on a national scale, regional initiatives can be connected and achieve a greater impact. It also becomes easier to establish international partnerships. SMASH! brings together industry stakeholders, governments, and knowledge institutions on a large scale to achieve this.
How do we do this?
We work towards our ambition by:
- Uniting the sector by acting as a central point of contact
- Developing a shared roadmap and knowledge agenda
- Setting up joint projects
- Serving as a consultation platform, for example on legislation and regulations
- Promoting smart shipping in the Netherlands
What exactly is smart shipping?
Smart shipping refers to the advanced automation of navigation at sea and on inland waterways. Smart shipping goes beyond the concept of a “smart vessel”: adjustments to the maritime environment are also needed to enable smart vessels to operate effectively.
Why is smart shipping important?
Smart shipping is a development that improves the competitive position of both the shipping sector and the Netherlands. It contributes to more sustainable shipping and enhances safety through digital systems that support human decision-making and operations.
