Maritime Talent Programme

Invest in Tomorrow’s Talent and Strengthen Your Business Today

The maritime sector is facing a major challenge: a structural shortage of technically skilled professionals. Projects are delayed, workloads are increasing, and the influx of young talent is not keeping pace with demand. The Maritime Talent Programme offers a concrete and practical solution: a two-year programme that prepares recently graduated MBO and HBO talents for a sustainable career in the maritime sector while enabling them to contribute directly to your business from day one.

What is the Maritime Talent Programme?

The Maritime Talent Programme is a two-year traineeship for recently graduated technical professionals with an MBO (level 3/4) or HBO background. The programme is part of the Human Capital pillar of the Maritime Master Plan, an initiative supported by the Dutch National Growth Fund.

Participants are recruited, selected, and guided by Critical Minds, an organisation with fifteen years of experience in training and developing young professionals.

Over the course of two years, participants complete three consecutive assignments of eight months each at different participating companies or departments. This allows them to build broad sector knowledge, learn to adapt across organisations and contexts, and develop into versatile professionals ready to meet the challenges of the modern maritime industry.

How does the programme work?

Three assignments, three companies, two years

Each participant works for eight months at a participating company, contributing to a project or department. After eight months, they move on to a new assignment at another company. This process is repeated three times, giving participants hands-on experience across multiple organisations within the sector by the end of the programme.

Learning alongside working

Alongside their assignments, participants follow a structured learning programme:

  • Trainee days – every four weeks
Dedicated entirely to learning and development. On these days, trainees do not work within their department or on their project, but instead participate in training sessions, coaching, and peer learning.
  • Project days – once every eight months
At the end of each assignment period, projects are reviewed and completed. All participants also work together on broader challenges facing the maritime sector.

Three learning tracks

The programme is built around three interconnected learning tracks:

  • Personal development
Self-awareness, resilience, leadership skills, and personal growth.
  • Professional development
Presenting, giving and receiving feedback, communication skills, conversation techniques, and managing resistance.
  • Technical development
Production processes, project management, and technical training provided by participating companies, complemented by sector visits and excursions.

What profile are we looking for?

All participants in the Maritime Talent Programme have a technical background. We recruit recent graduates with qualifications in maritime engineering, mechanical engineering, technical business administration, or ICT at MBO or HBO level.

These are not generalists, but young technical professionals who can contribute immediate value on the work floor.

In addition to their technical expertise, participants are characterised by strong intrinsic motivation, flexibility, an innovative mindset, and the ability to adapt quickly. Together with your organisation, we tailor the participant profile to your assignment, ensuring the best possible match for your project or department.

What does your company gain?

Participating in the Maritime Talent Programme is about more than hiring a junior employee. It is an investment in the future of your organisation and the maritime sector as a whole.

Participation offers:

  • Immediately deployable talent
Trainees contribute directly to a project or department and are supported by an internal supervisor within your organisation.
  • No employer risk
Participants remain employed by Maritime Talent. Recruitment, selection, contracts, and payroll administration are fully managed by us.
  • Fresh knowledge and new perspectives
Trainees bring recent academic knowledge, digital skills, and an innovative perspective that strengthens your team.
  • Employer branding
Position your organisation as an attractive employer for young technical talent and increase your visibility within the maritime network.
  • Sector network
Connect with other participating companies and help build the human capital foundation of the maritime sector together.

How can your company participate?

Participation in the Maritime Talent Programme is open to companies in the maritime sector that can offer a trainee a concrete assignment or project.

Participating companies are expected to provide:

  • A clear assignment description as the basis for matching
  • An internal supervisor to guide the trainee and act as the main point of contact
  • Availability for the kick-off, interim evaluation, and assignment closing session
  • A monthly programme contribution of approximately €500–€1,000 (excluding payroll costs for the young professional)

The first cohort will start in September 2026. A second cohort will follow in September 2027.
