SolarDuck installs Japan’s first floating solar plant

Tokyu Land Corporation and Dutch company SolarDuck, in collaboration with Kyocera Communication Systems Corporation, have completed the installation of Japan’s first offshore floating solar photovoltaic power plant. It is located on the sea surface under the Tokyo Bay eSG Project.

 

This demonstration project by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims to realise the world’s most advanced energy generation and transmission from the Tokyo Bay Area. The offshore solar power generation facility measures approximately 30 x 26 x 6 metres and is installed in the central breakwater area.

 

SolarDuck, together with Everblue Technologies, Inc. were selected in November 2022 in the field of “cutting-edge renewable energy” and have been working on the demonstration. Over the course of FY2024, the two companies will conduct demonstrations of power generation using offshore floating solar photovoltaic (OFPV) power generation facilities, storage of electricity in batteries on the ground, and transportation of the storage batteries.

 

Powering vehicles and a boat

The renewable energy generated will be used to power Open Street Corporation’s electric mobility vehicles and to power and navigate an electric boat. In addition, the company plans to consider the use of renewable energy for future events in the Takeshiba area of the Tokyo Bay area.

 

In addition to aiming for the practical application of Japan’s first OFPV power plant, the demonstration test of local production for local consumption of energy centred on the Tokyo Bay area will contribute to the study of urban models that can be deployed in other parts of Japan and abroad.
