Europort: open dialogue between young professionals and current leadership

On Friday the 10th of November YoungShip Rotterdam and Young RMSC are hosting an open dialogue between young maritime professionals and seasoned leadership at Europort. The event will provide valuable insights into how companies can bridge the perceived generation gap in the workplace.

Earlier this year the Young Maritime Board and Erasmus UPT conducted a study into the needs and motives of young maritime professionals active in the Rotterdam region, leading to unprecedented insights. For example, the results showed that 51% of young professionals are contemplating to jump ship towards other industries. Alarming signals calling for action, if companies are looking to keep young professionals onboard.

Understanding what drives young professionals

If the industry would like to want to retain young professionals in the maritime sector, it must be able to compete with other sectors in terms of working environment. YoungShip Rotterdam and Young RMSC (both prominent members of the Young Maritime Board) believe the maritime industry should focus on understanding what drives young professionals in this day and age.

Recommendations of the study include the following: provide sufficient opportunities for professional and personal growth, emphasise innovation and the international character as well as to promote an inclusive culture. The perceived ‘generation gap’ in management styles is seen as a critical issue in putting the recommendations into practice. Apparently, this gap leads to unnecessary misunderstanding and tension between older management and young employees.

The seminar

The seminar will feature several speakers in a panel discussion format. The panel will include a psychologist, an established leader and an emerging leader. All attendees are most welcome to contribute to this event by sharing their insights.
