Maritime Master Plan
The Maritime Master Plan
A strong maritime sector is of great importance for the prosperity, safety and energy needs of the Netherlands. The sector includes ports, offshore, fisheries, sea and inland shipping, knowledge institutes and services. Ships form the common factor and are essential for transport, food production, coastal protection, defense and renewable energy (such as offshore wind).
Energy transition and future prospects
The Maritime Masterplan is an ambitious subsidy scheme that focuses on the joint development and construction of climate-neutral ships. By investing now, the Netherlands can bridge the gap between research and large-scale production. The plan focuses on the construction of approximately 30 demonstration ships to stimulate the transition to sustainable shipping both nationally and internationally.
This initiative not only strengthens the safety and autonomy of the Netherlands and Europe, but also promotes a future-proof maritime industry. By making the ships climate-neutral, the Netherlands can play a leading role in the transition to sustainable energy and the reduction of greenhouse gases.
Strategic autonomy and economic contribution
A maritime sector with the knowledge and skills to develop and build ships itself is an important building block for Europe’s strategic autonomy and for national security. 90% of imports and two-thirds of exports are via sea and inland shipping. These exports contribute more than 30% to our GDP. With a total added value of 56.5 billion euros and 590,000 employees, the sector is one of the largest pillars for a flourishing Dutch economy.
